I would highly recommend getting your Hair Dressing NVQ Level 2, which is a good grounding in cutting, perming, colouring and styling. It gives you time to touch and play with hair and to shampoo properly. When I walked out of college I was technically qualified but it took another six or seven months before I stopped worrying whenever someone walked into the salon.

What is your essential equipment list? The most important thing is my eye. You need to look and never stop looking. And use your mirrors. On a practical level, you need a good basic kit and make sure to invest in a great pair of scissors. At what stage of filming do you get involved? When the actors and the directors first get together for a read through of the script, which can be a month before filming begins.

As people start to get a better understanding of their characters, they start to think about how they want to look and the kind of hair and make-up they need.
